The Bancroft campus consists of five adjoining buildings totaling approximately 94,000 square feet of space. The original building was constructed in 1923, with additions constructed in 1932, 1938, 1961, and 1973. Bancroft underwent modernization from 2016-2018 complete with a ribbon-cutting ceremony hosted by Mayor Muriel Bowser. Features of our campus include:
- A state-of-the-art gymnasium
- A modernized visual arts classroom, equipped with a fully functional kiln
- A dedicated PreK and Kinder play area
- A courtyard with two separate place spaces: a soccer field and a playground with jungle gym, swing, half basketball court, and life-size interactive musical instruments
- Interior and exterior garden spaces with chicken coop
Participation in high-quality extended day programs has been proven to improve school attendance, academic achievement, graduation rates, and attitudes toward learning. Students attending three hours of afterschool programming each day gain the equivalent of nearly four months of learning time.
In addition, there are several afterschool enrichment opportunities open to all students, regardless of enrollment in the afterschool programs. These include First Lego League and Bancroft Builders (based on STEM-based curriculums), Chess Club, Safari Club, Karate classes, GeoPlunge (a geography-learning game which culminates in a citywide tournament), Basketball, Drama Club, and Drumming!
